Diabetes Treatment in Boulder

Overcoming Type 2 diabetes without drugs can seem like an insurmountable task. The disease affects hundreds of millions of people a year, and it’s known for being persistent and difficult to treat. If all the medicine in the world can’t cure it, what choices are left?

The good news is you can beat diabetes without resorting to expensive drugs. It takes the right outlook and a persistent mindset, but if you start now you can prevent the disease or even manage your symptoms without severe lifestyle changes.

Functional Medicine and Diabetes

Functional medicine deals with each patient as a whole person, not a collection of symptoms. We look at all areas of life to analyze a disease’s origin and uncover contributing factors to the condition, along with possible paths back to wellness. It’s not about decreasing or managing symptoms, it’s about eliminating the root cause of an issue for real, long-lasting health. Thinking and linking, that’s the key!

Many diabetes issues actually start in places like the gut. Infections such as Helicobacter pylori can increase inflammation and decrease insulin sensitivity, causing blood sugar levels to rise. Cortisol also plays a strong role in insulin responsiveness. Elevated states of stress are a prime cause of the hormone’s increase, which means factors like your work situation or home environment can actually contribute to diabetes.

Standard & Natural Diabetes Treatments

The usual course of treatment for diabetes involves dietary restrictions, daily exercise routines, strict blood glucose monitoring, and medication. The medication alone tends to be expensive, and the list of side effects includes everything from weight gain to upset stomach and kidney complications. Standard treatments also fail to detect diabetes before onset, missing the window of prevention that could save countless people from the disease.

At Red Tail Wellness Center, we use a natural approach to diabetes treatment that focuses on the cause of the disease. This involves a thorough evaluation along with diet and routine adjustments paired with supplements and other modalities, all tailored for your unique situation.

Our Approach to Treating Diabetes

Blaming and taming the symptom doesn’t get you anywhere. You have to ask and answer the all-important question of “Why?” before you can make lasting progress.

Working with us means comprehensive treatment and a functional approach that starts the moment you walk through the door. Here’s what you can expect:

  • Comprehensive vitals, including blood pressure, pulse oxygenation, and Bioimpedance Analysis.
  • A neurologic and metabolic exam to objectively understand where your health stands (patients with peripheral neuropathy undergo the Toronto scale evaluation).
  • A thorough review of your new patient paperwork so that our doctors understand the cause and severity of your suffering.
  • Tailored plans that help organize and support your “Why” through unique dietary changes, custom supplementation, and in-house therapies to improve your body’s natural ability to heal itself.
  • Explanation of advanced labs that may be necessary to get to the root cause of your issues.
  • Objective follow-up laboratory assessments to show your progress and confirm the positive changes you are noticing.

Let’s do a deep dive into the more substantive points above for a little clarification on exactly what you can expect and how you’ll benefit.

Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis

A frequently used method for body composition and body fat estimation, Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis (BIA) measures electrical impedance, which is the opposition to an electrical current flow through body tissues. This measurement is leveraged to determine total body water (TBW), which in turn gives an estimation of free body mass and, ultimately, body fat.

While earlier methods and consumer-purchased portable BIA equipment were unreliable in measuring body fat, Red Tail Wellness utilizes the latest clinical technique—direct segmental multi-frequency BIA technique (DSM-BIA)—to accurately and reliably assess total body composition, leaving no part of the body unaccounted for. In conjunction with blood pressure and pulse oxygenation measurements, we can get a swift handle on your vitals and move toward setting up a course of diabetes treatment and therapy.

Neurologic Exam

In addition to Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis and a standard metabolic blood test that measures glucose level, kidney and liver function, fluid balance, and more, we perform a full neurologic exam on your behalf in an effort to gain a thorough understanding of your specific condition and plan natural therapy accordingly.

Aside from a comprehensive documentation of your personal history, our neurologic examination accounts for the following:

  1. General mental condition
  2. Muscle strength
  3. Motor system and fine motor skills
  4. Cranial nerves
  5. Posture, gait, speed and coordination
  6. Reflexes
  7. Sensation

The result of this examination helps us at Red Tail to build a treatment and diet plan unique to your case.

Diabetes Diet Plan

Eating healthily is fundamentally critical to managing your diabetes. You can control your blood glucose level through smart and savvy food choices.

Adhering to a strict diet and measured eating habits can also promote healthy weight loss, lower blood pressure, and reduce the risk of heart disease. The reason? A diet high in bad fat and calories leads to runaway blood glucose production, which in turn will give rise to hyperglycemia (high blood glucose) and, potentially, kidney, heart and nerve damage.

To mitigate the likelihood of occurrence of the above ailments, we’ll work hand-in-hand with you to develop a dietary plan that makes sense to you and delivers lasting benefits. As a primer, here are some safe foods to turn to for your daily sustenance:

  1. Healthy carbohydrates (fruits, vegetables, legumes such as lentils and beans, whole grains, and low-fat dairy)
  2. “Good” fats (walnuts, olive oil, and avocados)
  3. Fish (tuna, salmon, and other fish high in omega-3 acids)
  4. High-fiber foods (beans, nuts, fruits, and more)

While all of the above isn’t a comprehensive explanation of the techniques and therapies at our disposal at Red Tail Wellness, you can see how each serves to form a foundation for sound diabetes treatment.
